Dancebase Limited

14-16 Grassmarket, Edinburgh

Dancebase is a Regional Dance Centre, a focus for community and professional dance. Its site fronts to the urban forum of the Grassmarket and stretches back up to Johnston Terrace, which snakes round under Castle Rock. The building comprises a 70 metre dogleg sitting on a steep embankment, with the rear entrance two floors above the street. Each of the four Dance Studios has an individual characteristic, with differing views. The Principal Studio looks upward through its glazed roof to Edinburgh Castle and beyond.

The Project was short-listed for the Stirling Prize in 2003 in addition to receiving a host of architecture awards.
