BREEAM Sustainability Experience

BREEAM

The Building Research Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) is one of, if not the, world’s leading environmental assessments for buildings, and the mostly widely used especially in the.

BREEAM provide a clear environmental performance indicator of buildings (whether this be new, refurbished buildings or under Operation and Maintenance) providing ratings to describe the buildings environmental performance.  Credits are awarded in nine different categories according to performance and are weighed appropriately.  These categories are:

        ·          Management
·          Health and Welling Being
·          Energy
·          Transport
·          Water
·          Materials
·          Waste
·          Land Use & Ecology
·          Pollution

These credits are then collated into an overall score and awarded a rating; these being; Pass; Good; Very Good; Excellent and the new Outstanding rating.  Since 2008 BREEAM now requires a Post Construction Review (as built)to be undertaken to ensure conformity of the Assessment to that at the Design Stage.

For each Assessment (at the Design and Post Construction Review Stages) we shall undertake;

·          A start-up meeting to ascertain a draft score and target score, and to offer advice to the Team;

·          Guidance Report advising on predicted scores, target credits, potential scores, evidence to be issued and how it should be collated.

·          Regular score ands target score analysis

·          Ongoing support and interim meetings where required

·          Liaise with the BRE on technical items which are not covered by the BREEAM standard requirements

·          Undertake an thorough internal quality Assured (QA) process prior to issue of any final reports issued to BRE

·          Final assessment reports liaising with the BRE as required during their QA process.
